Music Tree II

The Music Tree II offers students from the beginning Music Tree a chance to continue their piano instruction in a group setting. Students will continue to expand their music reading skills while they develop a relaxed piano technique, focusing on playing with both hands simultaneously.

Unsure of which instrument your child should study?Would you like them to try two instruments – piano and violin – before you make a commitment? Children receive an 8-week introduction to both the piano and violin. Students will need access to a piano; MacPhail will provide violins. Parents are encouraged to attend class with their child during the violin portion, in order to better assist the child in home practice.

Children will learn to play the snare drum, marimba, timpani, drum set, vibraslap, cabasa, gong, congas, bongos and more. Through games, movement, creative activities, listening and ensemble playing, children will develop a strong sense of rhythm plus basic music skills and technique. Students need only to provide their own practice pad and drumsticks. Percussion for Children has a two semester curriculum. For a complete experience, students should enroll in both semesters.

Get them ready to light up the stage with MacPhail’s new Singing for Children class designed to teach children how to properly use their voices and bodies while still having fun! By using a variety of genres like musical theater, contemporary and traditional children’s music as well as popular Disney songs, students will learn how to engage their whole body to create a beautiful sound and an entertaining presentation. Students will also explore music through improvisation games and activities as well as work together as a group to compose new songs. No previous experience is necessary.

Vocal Adventures for the Young Singer

Drum a cool groove on a bucket. Improvise a solo on a tin can. Even if you’ve had no formal music lessons you can be part of this fun new ensemble using everyday items as musical instruments. Students will learn basic drumming and rhythmic skills and how to improvise their own rhythms.

Prelude: Singer/Actor Performance Lab

The Prelude Program is a yearlong program (September–May) for singers who seek an environment where they can experiment and discover new possibilities as a performing artist. Calling composers of all ages! Come and learn compositional techniques and meet others with a passion for creating music. This semester students will study and analyze Puccini’s operatic masterpiece, La Boheme. The final class will be held at the Ordway Center where students will hear a performance of La Boheme by the Minnesota Opera. To receive the 50% group ticket discount, students and family members who wish to attend the performance must contact Sarah Miller by December 11. A Beginner’s Guide to Score Reading

Have you ever wondered just what the orchestra conductor is looking at? And how he/she can possibly process all of that information? This is an overview of what is present in an orchestral score, and how to follow it as the music goes by without getting too lost! Students must purchase a score of Beethoven's 8th and 9th Symphonies to use in class, available from Dover Publications.

Tired of always performing other people’s compositions? Interested in composing but not sure how to get started? Work with the basic elements of musical composition such as melodic writing, harmonizing, accompaniment patterns and ostinatos to create two short pieces for the instruments of your choice. Basic music reading skills are necessary, but no composition experience is required. Bring your own manuscript paper.

Songwriting for Pop Musicians

Study the creation and production of popular songs with two of the Twin Cities’ best-known musicians. Analyze song structure, develop lyrics and learn instrumental arranging and preproduction techniques in preparation for a studio recording session. Work on pre-production in class, then travel to a recording studio where one or two student songs will be recorded.

The Blues to Jazz Connection

The Blues to Jazz Connection begins with improvising over traditional blues and progresses towards soloing on jazz standards. One goal of this ensemble is to demonstrate that improvisation techniques used in the blues may also be effectively applied to jazz, Latin and fusion music. This ensemble is open to any instrument (violin, banjo and flute, etc.) as well as guitar, keyboard, bass and drums.

Discover the music and career of one of America’s Jazz Giants: Miles Davis, as guided by New York jazz trumpeter Kelly Rossum. Hear the history of jazz as we move through the sounds of Miles Davis’ long career. Weekly essays, including musical examples and resources guides, will be posted on the secure website, serving as a launching point for an interactive online class discussion. In addition to posting the weekly content, the instructor will be participating in the online forum by leading discussions and answering questions that the students may have. Student participation in the forum is recommended, although not necessary.

Diction for Singers

A must for all classical voice students! Learn the basic phonetic sounds of three of the most widely used languages in classical voice literature: Italian, German and French. Four sessions will be devoted to each language. Each session will consist of two lecture classes followed by two master classes where each student will perform and receive language coaching. Students will receive a packet of 2-3 songs in both a low and high key along with a recording of the songs. Students will pick one song to perform at the master class sessions with a provided collaborative pianist.
