Teaching Philosophy
Our 38 summer camps provide a fun and unique learning opportunity for students to explore music in a creative environment and develop skills that will last a lifetime. Each camp is specially designed to meet the needs of the student and to create a nurturing environment that promotes cooperation, creativity and self-discovery. Camps are a great opportunity for social interaction with students of similar level and interest.
What You Get
Instrument based camps offer an intensive experience that culminates with a performance opportunity. Camps for young children provide opportunities for exploration and musical skill building that will provide a strong love of music while building a foundation for future musical growth. Camps provide an excellent opportunity to broaden a student’s experience in an instrument area and participate in activities that supplement their current knowledge. For example, Musical Trolley students will discover the wonders of Saint-Saëns’Carnival of the Animals through listening, exploring, as well as seeing the animals live. PercussionCamp students will make their own mallets and RockWeek students will conclude their camp with a performance at First Avenue.

Audition Requirement: To qualify as a participant in training courses rather than auditor, applicants must submit a video audition of specified repertoire to the SAA, preferably prior to enrollment. Videos should be submitted
at least 8 weeks prior to the course start date, with the required fees and a completed application form. If submitted later than 8 weeks before the course start date, audition results determining participant eligibility may not be available prior to the course, and will requires late audition fees. For courses occurring during summer 2009, applicants submitting tapes later than March 31, 2009 may not receive audition results prior to the course, even if meeting the above deadlines. An applicant may enroll late as “tape pending”, but will incur late audition fees, and audition results determining eligibility for participant credit will probably not be available until after the course. If auditions from“tape pending” applicants are not accepted, their course work will not be eligible retroactively for SAA credit registration as a participant, only as an auditor—even if course work was completed.
For further information, please see the SAA website at www.suzukiassociation.org and find the downloadable video audition application form (with instructions) in the teacher section, or call the SAA toll free 1-888-378-9854 for this form.
Required Course Preparation: All workshop participants are asked to prepare the repertoire to be studied to the point of fluent performance. Memorization is not required but is recommended. Additionally, participants should be conversant with the ideas presented in Dr. Suzuki’s Nurtured by Love. All participants will be performing in class. Strings and woodwinds are expected to provide their own instruments. It is recommended that participants bring a tape recorder and a notebook to all sessions. 100% attendance is required for registering the course.
