Dr. Soojung Hong joined the MacPhail piano faculty in 2016. For over 15 years she has been teaching students of all ages, from absolute beginners to professional pianists, who, under her expert guidance, successfully prepare recitals, contests, and auditions.
She focuses on refining quality of tone, developing proficient technique and fostering musical expression while teaching basic music theory. She encourages solo and collaborative performance opportunities. As an active performer herself, she shares practical tips about public performance.
Dr. Hong is the winner of multiple competitions in Korea and the United States, including a University of Minnesota Concerto Competition, which resulted in a performance with the University Symphony Orchestra, and the International Romantic Music Competition, which resulted in a performance at Carnegie Hall. She has frequently performed at many important regional concerts in the Twin Cities as well as International Music Festivals in New York and China. She presents master classes and is a judge at various competitions. She is the founder and the Artistic Director of the PianoFun MN Competition.
She holds a Bachelor’s of Arts in Piano Performance from Ewha Woman’s University, South Korea, as well as a Master’s of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Minnesota on full scholarship.
Her lesson goal is to to make each student a well-rounded independent musician who can enjoy music for the rest of his or her life.
