At MacPhail, music education goes beyond lessons to build confidence, connection, and community.
Serving 15,000 students annually, MacPhail is the nation’s largest nonprofit community music school—a unique identity that comes with specific responsibilities to students, neighbors, and the community at-large.
As part of a three-year Strategic Plan, MacPhail is honing its focus on the Twin Cities in order to broaden support for students of all backgrounds, musical abilities, and financial circumstances. This direction supports a belief that everyone deserves access to the benefits of music education.
While MacPhail’s 217 talented teaching artists are equipped to offer expert instruction and industry guidance for students seeking a conservatory-level experience, for many students and families, studying music at MacPhail isn’t about mastering an instrument or preparing for a career as a professional musician.
“MacPhail is a transformative institution that empowers people to explore their musical passions and discover their unique identities,” says MacPhail adult student Ahmed Warsame. “Through its supportive community and diverse programs, it fosters personal growth and creativity, helping students uncover hidden talents and build confidence in themselves.”
Parent Katie Blake sees these outcomes in her children firsthand. “[MacPhail is] a place where my children feel like they can be themselves and leave feeling proud of their accomplishments,” Blake says. She commends MacPhail faculty for making lessons engaging. “They make my children feel unique and capable,” she says.
Delivering an excellent student experience and high-quality music education means supporting students’ individual goals at every level.
“It’s paramount to our mission as a community music school that we serve musicians of every age and stage,” says Paul Babcock, Chief Executive Officer. “We want to position ourselves as the best place to begin, continue, or recommit to music education.”
